Why I Was Afraid of English
For a long time, English was not just a subject in college; it was my biggest fear. I constantly worried about grammar mistakes, sentence formation, and whether people would judge my communication skills. Even though I had always been considered a good student during my school days, I lacked confidence whenever I had to write or speak in English.
My real English learning journey started during my BCA days, after one emotional classroom incident that completely changed my mindset.
The Classroom Incident That Started My English Learning Journey
Then came the moment that deeply affected me.
The teacher started reading an answer written by a girl in the class. The moment I heard it, I realized that my answer was very similar. The truth was that I had copied the writing style from my best friend because I did not trust my own English writing skills.
At that time, I believed that my English was not good enough to write answers confidently on my own.
How My Best Friend's Reaction Motivated Me
That single moment stayed in my mind for a very long time.
For the first time, I truly felt insecure about my English communication skills. I realized that my biggest problem was not grammar alone, it was my lack of confidence.
Sometimes, painful experiences become the biggest motivation for personal growth. That classroom incident became the turning point in my life. It planted the very first seed in my mind to seriously improve my English.
From that day onward, I slowly started focusing on learning English grammar, improving sentence formation, and building confidence in writing. I understood that communication skills are extremely important not only for studies but also for career growth and self-confidence.
Today, when I look back, I realize that this emotional experience was actually the beginning of my English learning journey.
How My First Job Interview Improved My Confidence in English
Until then, English had always been a subject I feared. I could understand basic things, but speaking confidently in English felt difficult. However, this interview experience became the second major turning point in my English learning journey.
Beginning My Job Search During BCA
Like many students in their final year of graduation, I had started searching for jobs and career opportunities. One day, representatives from Tech Mahindra visited for BPO recruitment and conducted a meeting for interested candidates. After attending the session, I decided to appear for the interview in Chandigarh.
For many people, travelling to another city for an interview may seem completely normal. But for me, it was a very big step.
Travelling Alone From My Village to Chandigarh
Still, somewhere deep inside, I wanted to prove myself.
I gathered courage, convinced my family somehow, and decided to travel alone for the interview. I still remember waking up early that morning, getting ready in whatever formal clothes I had at that time — though honestly, they were not proper interview formals — and leaving for Chandigarh with nervousness, fear, and hope all together in my heart.
Reaching the Interview Venue
After a long and tiring journey, I finally managed to reach the company office.
There was a huge crowd of candidates waiting for their turn. Almost everyone around me looked confident while speaking in English. Some were talking fluently, some were laughing confidently, and others looked fully prepared for the interview.
Looking at them made me feel even more nervous.
At that moment, I started comparing myself with everyone around me, and my confidence slowly began to drop. But fortunately, after some waiting, my name was finally called for the interview.
The Question I Still Remember Today
As soon as I entered the interview room, I greeted all the panel members politely. They were calm and professional, and they tried to make me feel comfortable.
Then one of them gave me a sentence to translate into Hindi:
“The bank has deposited money into your account.”
I translated the sentence correctly.
But the real problem was not the answer.
The real problem was my lack of confidence.
At that time, I was not even sure whether my answer was correct or wrong. Today, when I look back at that moment, I know that my translation was absolutely correct. But during the interview, nervousness and self-doubt were clearly visible on my face.
Sometimes, people do know the answer, but fear stops them from believing in themselves. That is exactly what happened to me.
The Moment That Hurt Me Deeply
The interview panel did not give immediate feedback. They simply told me that they would let me know later.
So I stepped outside and quietly waited while observing the other candidates around me. Most of them looked fluent and confident in English, and suddenly I started feeling left out.
Out of curiosity and nervousness, I even asked some employees there about my interview feedback. But they simply replied with a short “No” and moved on.
That small moment hurt me deeply.
It was not only about rejection. It was about realizing how much confidence matters during communication.
Why That Interview Became a Turning Point
For the second time in my life, I strongly felt the urge to learn English.
Not because English is a status symbol.
Not because speaking English makes someone superior.
But because I realized that communication skills can open doors to opportunities, confidence, career growth, and self-belief.
That interview in Chandigarh became another turning point in my English learning journey. It made me understand that fear can only be defeated by learning and practice.
Today, when I look back at that nervous girl travelling alone from a small village near Sonipat to attend an interview in Chandigarh, I feel proud of her courage.
Because sometimes, success does not begin with confidence.
Looking back today, I no longer see those experiences as failures. They became the foundation of my English learning journey. Every grammar topic I learned, every interview I attended, and every article I write today started with those two moments. If you're struggling with English, remember that confidence doesn't appear overnight—it grows through small steps, consistent practice, and the courage to keep going.
What Helped Me Overcome My Fear of Speaking English
- I accepted that making mistakes is part of learning.
- I stopped comparing myself with others.
- I practiced grammar because I wanted to understand, not memorize.
- Every interview became a learning experience.
- Confidence improved slowly, not overnight.
